I need help people. I’ve read loads of advice on “getting read.” I’m asking for submissions, ideas, suggestions, clues on what works best on ModernSophist.com. I’d really like to take this website to a new level but I’m having a difficult time with a key issue that will affect my future marketing: What’s It About.
I’ll tell you where I’m coming from, what I’ve got so far, where I think I’m headed, and you tell me what ideas have worked for you, what you want more of, and any thoughts on what could make it better. I haven’t got a specific niche, like some blogs. I’d like to think, as my current tagline reads, that my style will overcome my lack of niche.
Where I’m coming from:
I get these ideas that want to be written down. Sometimes it’s a musing as in, “I wonder why the movers who packed all my stuff labeled this item ‘Plasma’ instead of just ‘TV?’” Sometimes it’s a joke or a question or just a rant. Sometimes it’s a story. Sometimes the stories are true. I’m interested in politics, in asking questions, in how people work and in relationships. I love words; I love language. I love picking words and language apart (‘parsing’ is a good word for this). I majored in Philosophy because I enjoyed the exercise of argument and discussion for the sake of itself. The whole reason I started this blog was to have a place of my very own to put all these little ideas. I like working on the presentation. I like it when people participate. And I’m not the only one with this “blogging for myself but wouldn’t mind some followers” dilemma.
What I have so far:
- Personal Short Stories
- Musings on the weather, women, and breasts.
- Examinations of Language like with Douchebags, Love, and popular phrases.
- Podcasts of all of this
- Purely comedic pieces like Onion Style News Articles or “Names That Will Ruin Your Babies Future.”
- …this is where I write, ” and Much, Much More!”
What I’m Working On:
- Adding more Podcast content in the form of Sketches, Rants, Short Stories and possibly interviews (Did somebody ask about the BlackSpot Reunion Show?)
- Tightening up my categories to a few simple Subjects like Comedy, Language, News and Observations.
So tell me what you’ve liked so far and what you’d like more of.
Most importantly, I need to figure out an easy well to tell people what this site is about. Here’s how you can help. In One sentence, how would you describe ModernSophist.com to your friends? Now is the appropriate time to comment below.

I wish you writers would make up your own minds.
Actually, I like it all. Your work reflects you and that is really what you have to commoditize. Pick the things easiest to write about and go for it.
Otherwise go work for Playboy or Field and Stream.
A fine reply. But any suggestion for a tagline or how, in short, I would sell it to people. I’m looking for some kind of slogan or brand or something that is fairly direct.
Something like “Puts the wise in wiseass” Not very graceful, but close.
Modern Sophist_-A Rush Limbaugh for people that can read – and think.
Modern Sophist – Ruminations on ruinations
Modern Sophist – A Scrabble bag for the weary tempest tossed huddles masses.
Modern Sophist – A wiseass takes on the world.
I have more…..
The site is attractive and moves at a fast pace. It has a TV like quality to it, so I think it should catch the attention of most people taking a peek.
I personally would like more follow up on your thoughts. Yet, I think I’m less the norm and most people will probably thrive on the tease and stimulate mode.
I’m looking forward to seeing this site’s evolution.
Great Feedback Jim. I know what you mean about follow up. I think I’m usually remiss about follow up because I don’t really have a good idea of what people are responding to, and since something new always pops up, I’m apt to keep trying until I get something.
There was this one early case, the “breast” essay, that go so much attention (and this was like week two of the site) that I think I’ve since been chasing the ratings, so to speak, waiting for something to spark like that again. We shall see. I’m also not sure, in that light, that I could stand writing day in and day out about breasts and what men think of them, stimulating a topic though it may be.
HI I haven't read a lot in your blog yet so I can not give you a lot feedback but I mentioned you on my blog and thought you might want to know about it – Oh yes Seeded.Buzz brought me to yours!!!!
